Official visit to China by Minister for Culture, Community and Youth and Second Minister for Law Edwin Tong SC

1. Minister for Culture, Community and Youth and Second Minister for Law Edwin Tong SC made an official visit to China from 25 to 28 November 2024.
2. During the visit, Minister Tong attended the 4th Singapore-China International Commercial Dispute Resolution Conference (“ICDRC”) in Beijing on 27 November as the Singapore Guest-of-Honour. The ICDRC is an annual conference, jointly organised by Singapore’s Ministry of Law (“MinLaw”) and the China Council for the Promotion of International Trade (“CCPIT”). Since its inaugural edition in 2019, the Conference has become a key platform for legal practitioners, businesses, government officials, and academics from Singapore and China, to discuss how our two countries can work together to help businesses resolve cross-border commercial disputes in a fair, efficient, and effective manner.
3. IIn his opening address at the ICDRC, Minister Tong highlighted the close and collaborative relationship between MinLaw and CCPIT, which is reflective of the substantive relations between Singapore and China. Minister said that both countries should build on the strong ties fostered over the years, and explore new areas for collaboration. These efforts will help to support the economic development of our countries and bring mutual benefits, Minister said. 4. While in Beijing, Minister called on CCPIT Chairman Ren Hongbin and Vice Chairman Dr Yu Jianlong, and they discussed how we can strengthen our legal and dispute resolution cooperation to support our businesses.
5. Minister also travelled to Shenzhen, China to grace the opening of the Rajah & Tann Singapore LLP’s Shenzhen representative office, and visited the Shenzhen Court of International Arbitration who has been working closely with Singapore dispute resolution institutions, including the Singapore International Arbitration Centre, the Singapore International Mediation Centre and Maxwell Chambers, to promote international arbitration and mediation, and facilitate hearings.
5. Minister Tong was accompanied by officials from the Ministry of Law.
